Evening Talk : the Evacuation from St Malo in 1940

Distibution of food parcels in Jersey

On Wednesday 5th June, St. Helier Yacht Club is teaming up with the French Circle in Jersey (“Le Cercle Français de Jersey”) for an evening event, in readiness for the 73rd anniversary of the Evacuation from St. Malo, when yachtsmen compete for the Evacuation Trophy.

The French Circle has invited Monsieur Jean, a historian from St. Malo who has researched those dramatic days in June 1940, to come to talk to both clubs in the Westward Room at South Pier. He will speak in French, but his video presentation will have English subtitles, and an interpreter will also be on hand to assist during questions. Members will also be invited to contribute to the discussion – in English or French! – and the montage on the wall of the Club of photos from the Evacuation will also be featured.

The talk starts at 8pm, and the Galley will be open from 6pm till 8pm for those wishing to have supper, or just a drink, before the talk.

This will be a special occasion and should be of great interest to members and their guests, young and old, keeping alive the stories of the men who took part in rescuing so many Allied servicemen, with unassuming courage. There is no charge for this event, but we would be grateful if you email by return to confirm your attendance.
