Once a month, come to the AF and enjoy a French movie (WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES) with us!
Animation fan or not, please come around and be transported by the bittersweet and beautiful tale which will change your views on what can be done with animation.
Cherry on the cake, Stefan Rousseau will make a presentation of the movie and its director, and will organise a discussion afterwards about Jacques Tati’s universe and French animation movies around a glass of wine and nibbles.
The Illusionist is a beautifully hand drawn animation film for adults adapted from an anbandonned script by the great French director and actor Jacques Tati. Sylvain Chomet’s previous animation film was a worlwide sensation, Les Triplettes de Belleville (Belleville Rendez-Vous, 2003).
The movie details the story of a dying breed of stage entertainer whose thunder is being stolen by emerging rock stars. Forced to accept increasingly obscure assignments in fringe theaters, garden parties and bars, he meets a young fan who changes his life forever.
You will find depth of feeling, melancholia, incredible poetry of the images, slapstick comedy wrapped in a very intelligent script. Jacques Tati’s universe was all about the opposition between the old and the modern world, the absurdity and despair linked to an increasingly fast and cold new ways of living in society and this unfinished and unshot script is in the same theme. His beloved character, Mr Hulot, his cinematographic alter ego is at the centre of this moving story for your spectator’s pleasure.
Please, note that a small participation will be asked (£2 for AF members/£3 for non-members) as we will provide snacks and wine before and after the film.
