« We play to enjoy ourselves, to pass the time, but also to learn, to defeat, to win money, to tempt fate or to scare ourselves. Games are a powerful expression of human nature and cultural diversities.” (Jean-Claude Jacq, Fondation Alliance française)
In 2010, the Alliance Française Foundation decided to create a photography competition that is open to the members of all the Alliance française centres around the world.
In 2014, the theme ‘On joue sur la terre’ (’We play on Earth’) inspired amateur artists from 66 countries to participate in this worldwide contest. After carefully examining all the photos received, a professional jury (photographers, curators, journalists, etc.) selected 45 photos, which now have the chance to be exhibited around the world, from one Alliance Française to another.
“A world which cultivates the art of play is a world full of life, one that advances.” (Françoise Huguier, photographer, President of the jury)
Games have always existed, in all societies. This exhibition showcases games in their various social and cultural functions (board games, video games, outdoor games, children’s games, sporting events, etc.). It also gives us the opportunity to learn about the evolution of how people play games all around the world.
We invite you to discover these exceptionnal pictures at the Alliance Française de Jersey on Monday 1st June from 5.30 for the grand opening of the exhibition. You are cordially invited to join us for a buffet and wine while admiring the stunning works of francophile amateur photographers from all over the world.
