After a proper whacky comedy, this month we are exploring another side of the French comedy genre with the brilliant bitter-sweet comedy by the master of the genre, Pierre Salvadori, and with the superstar Catherine Deneuve and maverick director/actor Gustave Kervern in the lead. This is another success for Salvadori on an artistic and commercial level.

Antoine is too depressed to go on playing in his rock band. After wandering in the streets, he decides to seek an occupation. Very luckily, he is hired as the caretaker of an old Paris apartment building. He soon proves good at his job, even if he performs it a little eccentrically, and everybody grows fond of him. Antoine also develops a particular friendship with Mathilde, a recently retired woman who lives in the block and whose mental balance is deteriorating…

The director manages to infuse his characters with a gentle humanity that surfaces they are slightly lost and need those around them. Both Deneuve and Kervern movingly suggest Mathilde and Antoine are needy and fundamentally lonely characters that could go a little crazy if they’re abandoned by society. Playing on the ability of human beings to maintain their own fears, the movie is not a downright comedy but an intelligent and subtle social analysis with extremely funny moments.
